There is a near-drowning and other sinister goings on that will have you binge-reading this. The boys, now men in this wedding scenario, once bonded by a kind of pack mentality. He hears “nothing but the beat of my heart and the secret noises of the woods.” Angus, one of the ushers, had been forced into a survival ritual, blindfolded and taken by fellow schoolmates deep into the forest in the freezing night. Evil omens abound, such as the cormorant on a steeple, “a bringer of death.” The ushers, all friends from school, relate an event that occurred with one of them that is chilling, in fact dark and cruel. The number of dead inhabitants far outweigh the living. And yet as Jules, the bride, walks down the aisle, she says all is perfect, better than she had planned, in fact, and of her groom, she says, “It is impossible to believe (he) is anything other than the one I know him to be.” And yet she had received a note warning her not to marry him.
The author paints a fine picture of the characters and their interactions: the bride and groom, the bridesmaids, ushers, the wedding planner, with alternating chapters written in first person.
It’s known as “the island of ghosts.” The island home has been deserted since the '90s, until the wedding planner, Aoife, restores it.
The reader knows something is afoot, and that something is murder.Īuthor Lucy Foley sets us up nicely with a kind of novelistic tone poem and a macabre sense of foreboding. It should be about celebrating a joyous day, but is instead filled with suspense and gloom on a remote island off the coast of Ireland. “The Guest List” is a psychological thriller, with the theme being a wedding and the days leading up to it. Weddings are supposed to be glorious, happy days.
